A86 follows an irregular path around Paris with the distance from the city centre (Notre Dame) varying from 8 km to 16 km (5-10 miles).

The ring road is complete with the exception of a 10 km segment (1/8 of ring). A tunnel is built to complete the loop with the opening planned for October 2007.

A86 is a part of the four ring road system surrounding Paris and Ile de France

  • Peripherique, completed in 1973, roughly an ellipse 9 x 11 km
  • A86, the last segment (tunnel) to complete in 2007, irregular, 20 x 25 km (12x16 miles), similar in size with London North Circular and South Circular)
  • the Francilienne, a partial ring, circa 50 km (30 miles) in diameter, comparable with London M25 motorway
  • grand detournement de Paris (only a few segments are opened)
