A549 cells are human alveolar basal epithelial cells. A549 cells fall under the squamous subdivision of epithelial cells, associated with the diffusion of water, electrolytes, and other substances.

The human alveolar epithelial cell line A549 may be anchored or suspended in a solution in vitro.
