A1 means "very good" or in the best possible condition. It is usually considered to derive from the shipping insurers, Lloyds of London's description of A1 at Lloyd's, a first class ship. It was also a term popularised by the British War Office ABC system of classification for recruits in the First World War. A-1 recruits were considered fit for general service overseas.
A1 and A-1 are often used at the start of commercial business names so that they appear first in the telephone directory. For example, "A1 Cleaning Services" or "A1 Tool Hire".
