A159 road
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The A159 is an A-road in Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire, running between Scunthorpe and Gainsborough. The road is single carriageway for its entire 16-mile length.
[edit] Route (Scunthorpe-Gainsborough)
The A159 starts in Scunthorpe at the Queensway Roundabout on the A18 and heads southwards. At this junction, the A18 Kingsway is the exit to the west, and the A18 Queensway is to the east. Heading north from this junction would take you towards Scunthorpe town centre.
After about one mile, there are two Turn Off To Stay On (or TOTSO) junctions in quick succession: first turning right at Ashby Turn (turning left leads to Ashby Broadway), and then left at a set of traffic lights, where the A159 takes the name of Messingham Road. This takes the A159 out of Scunthorpe, through Bottesford and eventually to Messingham.
After traversing the mini-roundabout in Messingham to continue southwards, the road name changes to Northfield Road, and then again to Scotter Road upon leaving the village.
About 2 miles after leaving Messingham, the road bends to the right and enters Scotter (where the road is renamed Messingham Road once again). The A159 goes through Scotter for about a mile, before entering a woods (which is signed as Scotter Common and further on Laughton Wood Corner, after nearby village Laughton). The road through the woods is particularly straight, with a couple of sharp bends at either end, to set the road back on a southbound course.
The road once again takes a bend to the right before entering a village, this time Blyton. Roughly halfway through this village is the locally renowned Blyton Ice Cream. Shortly after this is a newly installed School Safety Zone, designed to make the road near Blyton Primary School safer. This includes a suggested speed limit of 20 mph and flashing lights prohibiting stopping at certain times. The road takes a sharp bend to the left before leaving the village and crossing a railway bridge.
The road is renamed once again, this time Thonock Road, and follows a somewhat twisty route towards Gainsborough.
As the A159 enters Gainsborough, it encounters a crossroads before passing (on the left) the Queen Elizabeth's High School. The road continues southbound through Gainsborough, through a tight S-bend before passing the Northolme, Gainsborough Trinity F.C.'s football ground. The road passes through a number of sets of traffic lights, passes a Tesco and comes to an end at a crossroads with the A631 - Thorndike Way/The Flood Road and the A156 - Ashcroft Road. Taking the The Flood Road to the west takes you towards Bawtry, Rotherham and Doncaster, taking Thorndike Way (a dual carriageway up a hill) heads towards the A15, Caenby Corner and Market Rasen. The A156 heads towards Lincoln.
