A1018 road

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The A1018 is a road in North East England. It runs between South Shields, at the mouth of the River Tyne, and the A19 near Seaham, County Durham. The route it follows is the old alignment of the A19, before it by-passed Sunderland and the construction of the Tyne Tunnel.

[edit] South Tyneside section

The road begins in the centre of South Shields, near the Town Hall as Westoe Road. This single carriageway road runs to Westoe Bridges where it splits with Southbound traffic continuing on Westoe Road and Northbound traffic using Imeary Street. Southbound traffic then uses Dean Road to bring it to the roundabout with Sunderland Road and Imeary Street. The A1018 then continues on Sunderland Road becoming dual carriageway at its junction with Wood Terrace. The road then continues past the Readhead Park to become King George Road. This continues as dual carriageway as it crosses the A1300 until it reaches the Ridgeway where it becomes Shields Road as single carriageway. The road then extends through Cleadon Village, becoming Sunderland Road at the junction with Cleadon Lane, this remains so until the border with Sunderland.

[edit] Sunderland section

As the road enters Sunderland from the north, it is known as Shields Road, then Newcastle Road. This long straight section passes through Fulwell and Monkwearmouth toward the River Wear. Between 1886 and 1898, the stadium of the football club Sunderland A.F.C. was called Newcastle Road and was located on this stretch of road.

Newcastle Road ends at a large roundabout. The road that heads directly toward the river, North Bridge Street, is only for north-bound traffic and buses. South-bound traffic takes a detour along Roker Avenue and then Church Street North. At this point, the A1018 merges with the A183 road (which also begins in the centre of South Shields). The two roads, as Dame Dorothy Street, pass St. Peter's Church and head across the Wearmouth Bridge into the centre of Sunderland.

The A1018 splits east toward Hendon as West Wear Street and then Sans Street. At a roundabout in Hendon, the A1018 heads west back into Sunderland as Borough Road and then south along the eastern edge of Mowbray Park as Toward Road. This section was the location of the Victoria Hall, which in 1883 was the scene of the disaster in which 183 children were killed in a stampede. While Toward Road continues into Hendon, the A1018 heads west along the southern-edge of Mowbray Park as Park Road where it joins the Esplanade roundabout which is the start of the A1231 road. The A1018 heads south, and becomes the Ryhope Road dual carriageway. This is the major south-bound trunk road out of the city centre.

Ryhope Road runs through Ashbrooke, Grangetown and then Ryhope itself, fluctuating between single and dual carriageway. Once through Ryhope the road becomes Stockton Road and then, following a roundabout, it becomes a feeder road for the A19.

[edit] Southern Radial Route

The entire Ryhope Road / Stockton Road section is prone to traffic congestion during rush hour, particularly through Grangetown. For this reason, Sunderland City Council devised the Southern Radial Route which, when opened, will become the new alignment of the A1018, by-passing Ryhope and Grangetown. This route will provide an improved connection for road freight traffic to the Port of Sunderland from the south, avoiding residential areas.
