8 x 60 Spitz
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 8 x 60 Spitz is an uncommon rifle cartridge of German origin, dating back to the interbellum period between World War I and World War II.
[edit] History
After World War I, the victorious allied forces prohibited civilians owning a gun of military caliber. Because of these new rules, a new cartridge was designed by extending the 7.92 x 57 JS (8 mm Mauser) cartidge case by 3 mm to create the to 8 x 60 Spitz.
The new cartridge used the same bullet and therefore only the rifles chamber had to be modified (drilled out by 3 mm) to accommodate the slightly longer case. This operation was easily performed on Gewehr 98 rifles, but only a limited number of guns were rechambered this way.
[edit] Guns
Not many guns use the this cartridge. Some Mauser Gewehr 98 and K98k rifles were rechambered for this caliber, but other rifles based on the Mauser action are sometimes chambered for this cartridge too.
