We should never permanently block an IP address, purely because we just can't be sure that we're permanently blocking the same person. Most IPs these days are dynamically assigned by DSL, dialup, or cable companies (although the DSL and cable ones change less frequently) and the majority of statics belong to institutions like schools where a ban would prevent valuable contribs from genuine users. The common policy (which we sensibly seem to be adopting) is to double the block length each time. This is wise - it's very common to see one IP do lots of damage one day, and then a week or two later do lots of good (clearly as an entirely different person). -- John Fader (talk • contribs) 00:26, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
