7zX is a file archiver for Mac OS X that handles the 7z archive file format. It has probably been the first utility to support the 7z format on the Macintosh, being distributed to the public a few weeks after the release of the 7-Zip Command Line Interface for POSIX systems, which it still uses as the default compression/decompression engine.
With the passing time, 7zX started including a number of features, including:
- 7zX support archives in the proprietary s7z format, which preserves Macintosh resource forks, Spotlight metadata, and other informations which are normally not retained with the regular 7z format;
- it can create self-extracting archives, which will expand on any computer with Mac OS X 10.3 or newer even if the 7zX software isn't installed on the host machine;
- it can compress archives directly from the Finder contextual menu (requires Mac OS X 10.4).
- it enables users to encrypt their archives with the AES-256 algorithm, and automatically recognizes password-protected archives.
- it is compiled as an Universal Binary.
- it supports Growl, a powerful notifications system for Mac OS X.
With the introduction of version 1.5, 7zX allows the users to recall a console from which additional parameters can be passed to the compression/decompression core. This allows experienced people to enable extra features, by specifying the compression method, level, [...]
Since version 1.5.3, a new GUI has been introduced, with the aim of making those advanced options available to anyone.
