76-mm air defense gun model 1938 (Russian: 76,2-мм зенитная пушка образца 1938 года) was 76.2 mm (3 inch) Soviet air defense gun, created by famous Soviet artillery designer M.N.Loginov. This gun was modernized version of 76.2 mm air defense gun model 1931 with slightly modernized barrel and completely new two-axle carriage ZU-8. This carriage was used in construction of more powerful 85 mm 52-K air defense gun, developed in 1939. The latter was chosen by Soviet authorities for further mass production and air defense ordnance plants were switched from 76.2 mm AD guns to 85 mm ones. As a result of this decision, total number of M1938 AD guns, delivered to Red Army, was relatively small. These guns were used in the first stage of Great Patriotic War and were gradually replaced by more powerful 52-Ks. The muzzle velocity of 6.5 kg projectile was 816 m/s; this allowed to reach 9250 m maximal fire height.

The external appearance of the 76 mm and 85 mm AD guns is very close, but pictured gun is 76 mm one, because 85 mm gun has much more massive muzzle brake.
