[edit] Description

  • English: the patient’s right hip (on the left in the photograph) has been replaced, with the “ball” of this ball-and-socket joint replaced by a metal head that is set in the thighbone or femur and the socket replaced by a white plastic cup.

Although not the case here, the hip prosthetic can also be made of ceramic which rarely wears out during the patient's lifetime. During the operation, a bonding cement is used to fix the cup to the patient's remaining hip bone.

One of the leading reasons for hip replacement is osteoarthritis of the hip joint in which virtually all of the cartilage around the top of the femur bone deteriorates over time, leaving a grinding bone-on-bone situation with the top surface of the femur ball usually taking on an appearance similar to sandpaper. This can result in a narrowing of the space in the hip's natural ball-and-socket joint structure, thereby causing limited mobility of the hip and an intense amount of constant pain in the hip joint.
