[edit] Rang de Basanti
Anon, I reverted your edits to the synopsis for Rang de Basanti. They made the synopsis very long, and gave away the ending. Readers do not read long synopses; it is very hard to write them so that they aren't boring. Please don't be discouraged; there are many other Bollywood films that need good articles! As for movie synopses -- it seems to a new editor as if they would be easy to write. You've seen the movie, you know a lot about it, you can just sit down and type. It is not that easy! It is hard, very hard, to write well. Most people write synopses that are too long and detailed; they are very hard to read. They are confusing and boring. That is because the writers aren't thinking of the reader when they write. It is just them and the computer screen.
I don't like being pushed into being harsh, but I thought your synopsis fell into many of those "new writer" errors.
It is extremely unpleasant having your prose criticized, especially by strangers you have never met. However, like exercise and dieting, it is unpleasant now and beneficial in the long run. I'm an occasional participant in an online writers' group, and many of the writers there are professional -- some of them well-known. They are very hard on each other. It's the good writers who take the criticism with grace, and say things like, "Hmmm, that didn't work for you, let me tweak it a bit," and the bad writers who defend every sentence of their prose with passion. They tend not to stay long. They don't learn anything and they don't improve.
Prose improves with practice, and Wikipedia is a good place to practice. There's also a place here for people who aren't prose stylists but are good researchers. If you are interested in Bollywood cinema, and want to make WP a good resource for Bollywood fans, you might want to go to List of popular Bollywood films and look for film names that are red. Those are films that should have articles, but don't. If you've seen those movies, and have information about the director, cast, release date, all that, then you can start an article. If you're STARTING an article, it's less important to write the perfect synopsis. Other people can come along and tweak it.
After you register, be sure to stop by WP:INCINE and sign up as part of our project. We have lots of editors working on Indian cinema. Zora 00:01, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
