Deterior is a one-man American post-metal band incorporating elements of progressive rock and occasionally death metal, creating a heavy atmospheric sound similar to Isis and Callisto.

[edit] Biography

The project was formed around 2004 under various changing names and styles, most of which failed to create interest or quality. The most prominent of these was Shadow Host. One album was recorded (but not released) under this name, and had a type of naïve melodic black metal sound. In 2005, the project settled on Deterior as its name, borrowing the word from Godspeed You! Black Emperor's demo tape All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling. The project's leader cites Godspeed as a prominent lyrical and atmospherical influence. The black metal sound was eventually entirely lost, and the post-rock impressions, combined with a strong death metal influence, helped shape Deterior's sound into a more post-metal category.

Deterior's debut EP, tentatively titled Visit Eternal, was written during most of 2005 and 2006. Several hours' worth of material was written, but most of it was scrapped to keep the recording and mixing process easier. Many of these leftovers may surface on later recordings. High school friend Dave Ruth was asked to join the band to record acoustic guitars; however, this collaborative effort never happened, and Ruth never became an official member.

Visit Eternal is purportedly in a mixing stage, even though vocals have not yet been recorded. The EP contains four full-length songs (running between six to eight-and-a-half minutes) plus one short interlude. A release is planned for sometime in late second quarter 2007 by the local small-scale media enterprise Garagemonkey Productions.

Although Deterior is not entirely a serious project, future releases beyond 2007 are quite plausible. The band hopes to eventually release a full-length album sometime within the next few years (mostly worked around material left over from the EP writing sessions), although the project will be taking a back seat to other things such as education.
