The 53rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held Sunday, November 4, 2001. The awards show was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres and was broadcast on CBS. The ceremony was re-scheduled twice from its original date because of the September 11, 2001 attacks that occurred prior to the event.
Ellen DeGeneres Quote from Telecast: "I mean, I feel like I'm in a unique position as host, because think about it, what would bug the Taliban more than seeing a gay woman in a suit surrounded by Jews?"

Two supporting West Wing actors, Bradley Whitford and Allison Janney, won the supporting drama prizes.
