I've been a fan of No Doubt since the Tragic Kingdom days. My point is not one of fashion or style, but of unconscious - perhaps even subconscious - exploitation of a Western view of a complex and irreducible culture. Do you know Harajuku is? Do you know know how subtle and unassuming racism and latent prejudice can be? I'm not sure that you do. Your admitted assumption that Gwen Stefani is just "respecting" asian culture (of which Harajuku is distinctively not emblematic) is precisely that - an assumption. You assume that Gwen Stefani is honouring a culture, while I simply submit an alternative explanation for her behaviour: that, while this may be her stated intent, her real motivation is a subconscious fetishization of Asia and Asian women/cultures/trends. I don't think that you can prove me incorrect; and, even were her intentions completely innocent, I think that her parading around of these Japanese girls promotes their objectification and other negative stereotypes of Asians that she has not considered, but ought to be discussed. jglc | t | c 04:11, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

  • Because your behaviour has given me no reason to think that you're well-informed. jglc | t | c 02:13, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
