40th Street (Subway-Surface station)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
40th Street is a SEPTA Subway-Surface Lines trolley station. Known as the 40th Street Portal, it is at this station that four of the Subway-Surface Lines go into the tunnel after running on the street in West Philadelphia and nearby suburbs. Trolley run in the tunnel from this station to Center City Philadelphia. After entering the tunnel, the trolleys run under the nearby University of Pennsylvania campus. In the other direction, trolleys travel to the Philadelphia neighborhoods of Eastwick and Angora and the Delaware County suburbs of Yeadon and Darby.
The station itself is above above ground right before the tunnel. When the tunnel is closed trolleys are routed to the 40th Street station of the Market-Frankford Line.
