[edit] Plot

The episode opens with a dream sequence, of Mr. Eko chopping wood with his axe on the beach. He is told by Ana-Lucia and by his brother Yemi that he must help John by having John take him "to the question mark".

During the Lockdown incident, while being trapped under one of the blast doors, Locke saw the blast door map for the first time. He later tried to recreate the map on paper by drawing what he remembered. Locke only had a few seconds to look at the blast door map though, so his memories of the details were rather patchy. He appeared to recall the station locations, the 'rivers' and the "?" in the middle the best. After various attempts, particularly in "S.O.S."., Locke finally drew a good copy, which was seen in "?", when he was handing it to Mr. Eko.

Michael stumbles out of the hatch, claiming that he had been shot in the arm by a person unknown to him. Sawyer, Kate, and Jack discover the shooting victims — Ana-Lucía is dead, and Libby is near death. Jack asks Sawyer for the heroin to treat her.

Eko offers to track down Henry Gale, with the assistance of Locke, but after they've left he reveals that his real goal is to force Locke to take him to the question mark, where they discover the burned plane containing Eko's brother. They camp at the site, and Locke has a dream in which Yemi is on top of the nearby cliff. After he wakes up, Eko climbs the cliff and sees a giant question mark in the ground. Locke and Eko lift the plane to find a hatch.

The printed report

Inside the hatch, there are chairs, TV monitors, and pneumatic tubes. Locke places his map in one of the tubes and it is swept away. Locke also finds another computer terminal with a command prompt: >: PRINT LOG? Y/N. Locke inputs Y, and a print-out is generated from a dot-matrix printer. Eko also finds another Orientation movie where it is revealed that the hatch they are in is "Station 5 - The Pearl", and it was made to observe the other station(s) and to record how the subjects act to that which they believe to be of great importance. The narrator of the Orientation video also reveals that the pneumatic tubes are used to send information back to the DHARMA Initiative.

In flashbacks, Eko is a priest in Australia. An associate gives him a counterfeit passport before he is sent to investigate a miracle of a drowning girl coming back to life. At first, it appears that the miracle is genuine. Eko then consults the girl's father, who claims that the girl and her mother are simply pretending that there was a miracle because they resent the fact that he is a fraudulent psychic. He is in fact the same psychic that Claire saw in "Raised by Another." Eko reports that a miracle did not take place. In the final flashback, Eko is confronted by the girl, who tells him that she saw his brother Yemi and that Yemi is proud of him.

Back on the island, at the Swan, Hurley requests to speak to Libby, and he tearfully apologizes to her for forgetting the blankets. In her dying breath, she says "Michael!", with a look of terror in her eyes. Jack, mistaking her horror as fear for Michael's safety, assures her that Michael is fine. The episode ends with Michael in the vault, looking gravely toward the doorway.

[edit] Notes

[edit] Trivia

  • Claire's psychic, Richard, who arranged her trip to Los Angeles is the father of the "resurrected" girl Eko visited.
  • Libby dies in this episode, yet Cynthia Watros is still credited for the rest of the season.
  • At a length of just one character, the title is certainly the shortest ever for a Lost episode, and one of the shortest in television drama in general.
  • Locke not wanting to have a second look at the orientation film of the Pearl station is reminiscent of Jack earlier at the Swan station.
