Warning templates should always be used with the "subst:" keyword, as strongly suggested on Wikipedia:Template substitution. They are shown without subst here to reduce the display space occupied by this table, not to encourage their use without subst. For example, type {{subst:uw-vandalism1}}~~~~ (not {{uw-vandalism1}}) to warn common first-time vandals.

The levels of templates are:

  1. Assumes good faith
  2. No faith assumption
  3. Assumes bad faith; stern cease and desist
  4. Assumes bad faith; strong cease and desist, last warning

Warning

Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions in a content dispute within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. Rather than reverting, discuss disputed changes on the talk page. The revision you want is not going to be implemented by edit warring. Thank you.

[edit] Edited for clarity

I've edited this template for a little more clarity, specifically:

  • Explain what a revert is;
  • Explain what a block is;
  • Eliminate redundancy.

"Block" links to the blocking policy, which is not so hot because that page is policy, not an accessible explanation for newbies, but it's the best thing I could find. Writing up something new seems like a good idea. Yeah, yeah, I know, {{sofixit}}...

This message is still not optimal. In particular, it has no room for explaining what article you're talking about (consider using the section header), or the diffs that constitute the reverts. Do not use this unless the revert is no older than a few minutes, so there's no possible risk of confusion. Even then it's not perfect, because you'll never be able to find the original 3RR violation after some time. Use it wisely. Create your own template if need be.

Please do not insert this template as {{3RR}}; this will make changes to it appear retroactively, which is confusing, and makes it a potential target for trolls. Use {{subst:3RR}} instead. Whether you sign this message is up to you, but I suggest you do, in the spirit of assuming good faith and giving clueless newbies a real person to talk to over this potentially scary issue. Keep in mind that malicious people will usually be blocked under the 3RR anyway, so you're not risking much. JRM · Talk 22:59, 2005 May 4 (UTC)

[edit] Opinion

Using this template is rude, you need to write users a personal message relevant to the topic, because they obviously feel strongly about something if they're reverting it a lot. Ashibaka tock 08:07, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

WP:3RR is considered violation regardless if the editor is discussing these reverts in the talk page. Template is now refactored to reflect the policy. ≈ jossi ≈ t@ 16:14, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Edit warring in general

Edit warring in general is prohibited. This template likely contributes to the erroneous notion often held by edit warriors that they have a right to revert 3 times within 24 hours, as long as they do not exceed the electric fence. This is false and ought to be curtailed by a template that explains that edit warring is forbidden, without specific reference to the numerical requirements of 3RR. —Centrxtalk • 22:05, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
