3 News is an hour-long nightly news bulletin on TV3 in New Zealand. It is currently presented by Hilary Barry and Mike McRoberts on weekdays, and by Carolyn Robinson at weekends.

[edit] History

3 News was originally known as 3 National News and first went on air in late 1989 when TV3 began broadcasting. Its original presenter was the veteran New Zealand news anchor Phillip Sherry. Other presenters in the early days included Joanna Paul and John Hawkesby.

In 1998, TV3 revamped its news and moved to two presenters, teaming up the current host John Hawkesby with Carol Hirschfeld. At the last minute, John Hawkesby pulled out after being offered the job of presenter of One News. John Campbell was asked to fill in at the last minute, but he remained as the main 3 News weekday newsreader, together with Carol Hirschfeld, for the next seven years and is now one of New Zealand's best known broadcasters.

On February 21, 2005, Hilary Barry and Mike McRoberts took over as the newsreaders of 3 News after Campbell and Hirschfield moved to present and produce respectively a 7 p.m. nightly current affairs programme, Campbell Live.

In May 2005, when the Mediaworks New Zealand-owned Radio Live network was launched, it began simulcasting 3 News at 6 p.m. in an attempt to reach commuters still driving home from work, especially in the Auckland market.

In September 2006, weeknight sports presenter Clint Brown was attacked in a Rotorua bar. He was also accused of abusing a Māori woman with racist comments. He said that he could not remember any of the incident, but maintained that he was not drunk. On October 18, 2006, Brown resigned after 17 years' service at TV3, following an inquiry into the assault. His sports presenting role was taken over by Hamish McKay in 2007.
