  • Julian gathers an army of 60,000 men, a fleet of fifty warships and a thousand transport boats. He secures the co-operation of the king of Armenia, Arsacès, and goes on Persia. Achieving success after success, he pushes on to Ctesiphon. Shapur II sues for peace, but Julian refuses. Soon, harassed by Persian guerrillas, the Roman army is forced to retreat.
