.berlin (dotBERLIN) is a proposed new top level domain (TLD). It is a so called sponsored generic top level domain intended to be a top level domain for all places with the name Berlin. The community of Berliners requests its own label on the Internet.
Along with TLDs such as .cat, .asia and .eu, .berlin and other proposed TLDs fall into the new category of GeoTLDs. The issue of new top level domains in general and .berlin in particular has been discussed at various ICANN-Meetings since 2005.
The rationale for the proposal of new TLDs for regions and cities is that the Internet is becoming more local and search enquiries increasingly concern the Internet user’s local environment. At the same time, domains are a scarce resource in some of the current domain endings. The proposal to extend the Internet’s namespace is seen as an advancement of the current system.
The .berlin campaign is backed by companies, institutions and individuals mainly from the German capital and being endorsed by the German Parliament, the Bundestag.
