[edit] Synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Homer gets a Canyonero SUV, but learns the model he bought F-series intended for women. He gives the SUV to Marge, but when she uses it, she develops road rage. On a day racing around town, Marge is arrested and ordered to go to take a defensive driving course. However, she accidentally drives the SUV into the prison and loses her driving privileges until the police need to recruit her to use the SUV to stop a bunch of raging rhinos who left the Zoo, when Homer accidently caused them to go out of control while visiting the zoo with Bart and Lisa. Marge agrees to help when she sees her family in danger on the news report, and succeeds by flipping over the SUV, setting the gas tank on fire and distracting the rhino. She credits her success to Stone Phillips. The whole family praises NBC. During the end credits, Homer praises FOX at gunpoint and he is shot when he praises CBS.

[edit] Cultural references

  • At the Springfield Elementary School talent show:
  • Dateline NBC – The scene where Marge's SUV rolls over and the gas tank explodes, and her remarks afterward, refers to an ill-fated 1992 "Dateline NBC" investigative report about the gas tank crashworthiness of 1973-1991 Chevrolet and GMC full-sized pickup trucks.
  • Peanuts - When a ranger at the zoo tries to shoot a rhinoceros with a tranquilizer dart, the dart bounces off the rhino's skin, then off Homer's rear, and hits a sloth. The sloth dances like Snoopy for a few seconds before passing out.
  • Screaming Yellow Zonkers – The episode title is a play on the popcorn snack (as well as a double-entendre, given the pigmentation of people in the world of the Simpsons).
  • Sport utility vehicles – The episode lampoons the then recent SUV craze, and increases in road rage. Also spoofed are vehicles marketed toward female demographics, whether a specific model (e.g., the Dodge LaFemme of the mid-1950s) or a model package (the Fashion Accessory Group offered on the 1978 Ford Mustang).
  • Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom – The name of the zoo, Wild Animal Kingdom, is inspired by the 1960s nature series.
  • The Gods Must Be Crazy – The "fact" that a rhino will instinctively try to put out a fire stems from this movie.
