User talk:24.6.151.228

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I can edit pages now, starting this afternoon. Thanks to whomever that looked and fixed this problem. Still, I urge that "admins" take extra precaution before deciding to be trigger-happy and do something like blocking an IP range of a large ISP in North America like Comcast.

I believe if you don't know what Comcast is, you don't deserve to be an admin. I wish Wikipedia would apply this litmus test to filter out "admins" that are truly incompetent.

First, the problem:

Some "admin" had the audacity blocking not just my IP address, but the whole IP range that belongs to Comcast Cable Internet, thus affecting me, a Comcast subscriber. Here's the "admin's" blocking message:

Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing. You were blocked by Raul654 for the following reason (see our blocking policy): "Range being used for vandalism" Your IP address is 24.6.151.228.

This is my FOURTH attempt trying to fix this problem. The "admins" I've talked to so far seem to be clueless. They keep saying that my IP is not blocked. Duh. I'm not saying that my IP address is blocked, but the whole Comcast IP RANGE is. Could someone else take a look?

Now, back to my previous opinion that based on my current experience, some Wikipedia "admins" are basically incompetent (and maybe a little touchy as well):

An admin, unable to find out the whole range of Comcast IP was blocked, left me this comment:

>If you keep making cracks about WP admins being incompetent, its not the best way to get things in motion.

I'm not saying all of you are incompetent, but if all of you were not, I wouldn't be blocked in the first place.

Being an admin in Wikipedia is a thankless job, I know. However, once you brand yourself "admin" and start blocking users out, you'd better damn well know not to block a range of IP address that belongs to such a large ISP like Comcast.

I could always talk to "Raul", but then, I'll have to create an account, and Wikipedia doesn't require people to have an account to edit. You people are messing up with this basic principle, and I'm starting to think how long Wikipedia can maintain free editing like this any longer, especially when its admins are getting more and more incompetent, yet are very touchy when someone bluntly mentions the fact.

BTW, it's "it's", as in "it is", not "its".

Admins, prove that you actually know what you're doing! Find out why I am still being blocked from editing, while your records are still saying I'm not blocked.

This is my third attempt to correct this problem. Still, I'm starting to have the impression that the people who have the power to block users should not have been given that privilege in the first place. They seem to be completely clueless up to this point!!!

I have copied and pasted the blocking message below. I'm going to do it again:

Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing. You were blocked by Raul654 for the following reason (see our blocking policy): "Range being used for vandalism" Your IP address is 24.6.151.228.

One hour later, and I'm still seeing the block message whenever I try to edit a page.

Admins keep telling me that I'm unblocked, and that is absolutely wrong, because I'm still blocked. Otherwise, I wouldn't waste my time keep posting unblocking request here. If I'm still blocked, and your records say otherwise, then obviously your records are wrong, and you have the responsibility to follow through, instead of doing some half-assed effort.

Can any admins who actually have a clue take a look and find out what's going on? The guy that blocked me calls himself "Raul654". Could anyone contact "Raul654" and ask him what he did?

I propose that Wikipedia should give the power of blocking people off from editing to ONLY people who ACTUALLY KNOW what they're doing!!!

Here's what the blocking message says:

Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing. You were blocked by Raul654 for the following reason (see our blocking policy): "Range being used for vandalism" Your IP address is 24.6.151.228.

As of now, I am still being blocked. Therefore, I'm putting my unblock request back so that one of the admins can take a look and resolve the matter, hopefully, correctly this time.

As I understand, Wikipedia does not make it mandatory for everyone that wants to edit its contents to create an account. By forcing people to open an account, you're violating the very basic principles Wikipedia (and the whole Wiki product) stand for.

Therefore, here are what I urge you to do:

1. Stop blocking my IP address.

2. Stop blocking the Comcast IP Range. Oh my dear God, don't you so-called "admins" know what you're doing? If you don't, then you'd better hang that "admin" hat in shame. Blocking the whole IP range of Comcast? This had better be a joke!

3. Stop forcing people to create accounts to edit Wikipedia. You've just got to know how to fight vandalism more efficiently, not forcing people into your own rules so that you can rest on your lazy ass.

[edit] Unblock request

I'm using Comcast, which has tens of thousands of subscribers. Do you seriously want to block the whole IP range of Comcast???

I request that you unblock my IP address, as well as the Comcast IP address range. You'd also better train your so-called "administrators" better, so that they won't mistakenly block tens of thousands of people out by blanket IP range blocking.

If you have to do it, do it carefully.

I removed your unblock request since you aren't blocked right now. This IP was blocked in November 2005 for 1 hour, and hasn't been blocked before or since. - Akamad 06:57, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
What does the block message say, as far as I can tell you are not blocked. Does it say your ip was recently used by someone -- Tawker 07:21, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
I'll try to unblock, but as he said. The records show you are NOT blocked. --LBMixPro<Speak|on|it!> 07:24, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Can you copy paste the block message over verbatim. That will help us determine what is going on -- Tawker 08:14, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Ok I'll check it out, we really couldn't do anything without that information as it was confusing the daylights out of us why your IP would be blocked otherwise. -- Tawker 08:19, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
If you keep making cracks about WP admins being incompetent, its not the best way to get things in motion. Normally IP range blocks are super short unless there is someone making massive amounts of vandalism from that range and won't stop, make an account and email the user, I can't touch the block / the blocking admin is the best person to contact -- Tawker 09:15, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
