[edit] Student response from IP
- Hello, this IP is apparently of the school I attend, Skyview High School, located in Billings MT. The vandalism is most likely from many immature and disgruntled students just causing trouble. I'm not sure if anyone here at this school who edits here at Skyview is aware of this on-going vandalism. Our administration probably doesn't know, nor cares most likely. No one from school should be editing articles, and if they do so, it should done while logged in their own account. If it's in Wikipedia's best interest, then I can understand this IP being temporarily blocked further. I am not encourageing that this IP be blocked, but I can see plenty of harm done via this IP. Though I am a mere student and do not know very well School's policy, you may want to contact our administration if it doesn't dawdle anyone's time.
- I myself have an account, and edit and contribute to wikipedia, but wish to stay anonymous. I stumbled upon this article or as displayed, 'messages' from reading up-to-date info on my interests. I mean no harm, and would like to help this issue be resolved. If this isn't any of my business, state so and I shall end my discussion and concerns here. If it is my concern, and if requested, I will reveal myself (account). For Wikipedia's and my school's best interest, let this contention become resolved. Thank you.
-
- Thanks for this notification. If you edit as an editor, this should not be an issue as you can (presumably) log in to Wikipedia whilst on the school's system. Notice the {{Shared IP}} notification that I have placed at the top of this page, and on the article page for this IP - this is the standard procedure for an IP address registered to an organisation. The 'no one from school, should be editing' is quite unfair, and against the spirit of Wikipedia - anyone should be able to edit - and it is entirely possible that there are some legitimate editors in your school. Nonetheless, if the IP continues to offend, then blocking could be the answer. See the relevant Wikipedia policies on blocking in the Wikipedia help pages. (Particularly WP:BLOCK). Thanks, and if you want any more information, please contact me on my talk page. (Also, to other users, please correct me on any incorrect information on the same page) Ck lostsword|queta! 21:00, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

- The openess and community of Wikipedia exist for the purpose of producing and encyclopedia. See what Wikipedia is not: it is not an experiment in anarchy, it is not an experiment in democracy, and it is not an indiscriminate collection of information. It is an encyclopedia. When the openess that has allowed the encyclopedia to be built becomes in certain hands a tool to harm it, that openess will be withdrawn from those hands. It's unfortunate that "collateral damage" occurs in the banning of shared IPs. But the choice is clear when certain IPs are used predominately to do harm. There comes point where certain schoolboys should be consumers and not producers of encyclopedic material.

- As for maintaining anonymity, IMHO you have more anonymity as a registered user. No identifying information is required, and it shields your IP address. Your IP address reveals information about you: in this case that you are a high school student in Billings, Montana. If you register, I have no way of knowing where you are or what your age might be unless you choose to tell me. It does let me connect a series of edits to the same individual, but without revealing anything about that individual.

This IP actually belongs to the entire Public School system of Billings, MT. I changed the notification at the top to reflect this. I am a computer technician at a different high school in town and was astonished that I'd had a message even though the only edits I'd made in the last several months were minor.(the wikipedia login system is a small annoyance to me) It was interesting reading this page since as I wasn't even aware that students knew much about wikipedia. I'm actually pleased to see the activity here even though its mostly vandalism. marnues 19:12, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
