I've noticed that you're adding some information about The Big Birthday Bash. As this has been copied from the school newsletter, it can't be included on Wikipedia for copyright reasons. You might like to have a read of Wikipedia:Copyrights. Hope this helps. Cnwb 00:06, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

This may have been printed in the newsletter, but I remain the author.

I've removed the section because it doesn't seem encyclopedic in nature. Rather, it is a review of an event. Cnwb 05:06, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

 An important message

This notice has been left for you because another Wikipedia user suspects that, perhaps innocently, you may have defamed someone in your contributions. Please recheck your edits. Do not make allegations against someone unless you have provided evidence from a reliable publication, and then make sure you describe the allegations in accordance with our content policies, particularly Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:No original research. Don't rely on hearsay, rumours, or things you believe without evidence to be facts, and don't use sources to create a novel narrative. Wikipedia requires reliable sources for all claims. Please see our policy on biographies of living persons.

Comments that defame an individual may leave you open to being sued by them. While Section 230 of the United States Communications Decency Act may protect Wikipedia from being sued for defamation, it may not protect the person who posted a defamatory claim on a Wikipedia page. The Wikimedia Foundation's Board of Trustees has ruled that: "Where the user has been vandalizing articles or persistently behaving in a disruptive way, [personal information] data may be released to assist in the targeting of IP blocks, or to assist in the formulation of a complaint to relevant Internet Service Providers." (Wikimedia privacy policy in full)

If you may have inadvertently defamed someone in an article, do two things:

  1. If the material is still there, remove it immediately.
  2. Leave a note on the administrator's noticeboard saying that you have accidentally included defamatory claims in a named article or articles. Don't repeat the claims. The claim can then be deleted from the page history.

This blocked user (block log | autoblocks | unblock | contribs) asked to be unblocked, but an administrator or other user has reviewed and declined this request. Other administrators or users can also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy). This unblock request continues to be visible. Do not replace this message with another unblock request nor add another unblock request.

Request reason: "This IP address is shared by the whole of Geelong Grammar School, which has about 1000 pupils. Just because maybe 1 or 2 misbehaved doesn't mean it's fair to block the whole school - there is too much damage to everyone else. It would be great if the block can at least be reduced to a few hours per time, and given similar treatment to say, AOL IP's, etc. Thanks so much"

Decline reason: "see below. Mangojuicetalk 13:50, 24 October 2006 (UTC)"

This template should be removed when the block has expired, or after 2 days in the case of blocks of 1 week or longer.
In response:-
1. Are you a member of the staff? It was close to 9:45PM (AEST) when this request was added. If so, the blocking admin may contact you to reach an agreement regarding student behaviour and possible remedies, however there are no guarantees. If you're a student, this makes no sense with the time zones.
2. In response to "It would be great if the block can at least be reduced to a few hours per time", there is no technical way to do this, and I'm sure that administrators don't want to be re-applying blocks every time of the day. This is not covered as a method under Wikipedia's blocking policy, also.
3. AOL IP's are given special treatement because everyone is reassigned every time they use a page. Hence, considering Wikipedia vandalism rates, on average 98%+ of contributions from an AOL IP would be positive. In this school's case, it has a high percentage of vandalism. Daniel.Bryant 11:05, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Keep in mind that just because this IP is blocked, it doesn't prevent members of the school from using Wikipedia, only from editing it. Because the vandalism has been so constant, the current block is a month long; it will expire on the 16th. But I guarantee, if the vandalism starts up again, the IP will be blocked again. Hopefully, a month is long enough to get the vandals to lose interest. If not, we'll try 6 months. Mangojuicetalk 13:50, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Clarity

  • Geelong Grammar has very many students (1000+). Some students, like myself, do like to positively make a contribution to society after all my homework is done (that's after 9:30pm). It is a real pity that a few students are vandals, and that is inexcusable, but it does not mean that we all are vandals. All of us work off this static IP address. Given this, does it mean that Wikipedia is willing to apply such an extreme measure of collatoral damage, just because of a few individuals? I have around 900 edits (though most are from home and other locations) on my username (now not logged in) and have never come accross something like this.
  • Obviously something needs to be done about vandalism, but is it fair to disable editing access for a whole month just because of this? Could a system not be applied whereby admins block for 24 hours at a time, at every instance? I'm sure administrators would not like to discourage bona fide editors. Otherwise, cannot 'page specific' blocks be used?
  • About 600 edits have been made from this IP. [1]. Not all of them have been made by vandals. About 43 instances of vadalism have taken place (per talk page), and whilst this is inexcusable, this means that 93% of edits are legitimate. Looking at the talk-page history shows that most of it happened within a few minutes, which shows that it is a good idea to use shorter block durations.
  • Are there any other options (e.g. if I use my account, will I be auto-blocked?) available to me. A SSL connection is not permitted at Geelong grammar?

Please can you show me exactly where I am wrong, because I want to make a positive contribution, and find it extremely discouraging that you are limiting me from doing so.

Please review the decision.

Decline reason: "I can sympathize with your plight, really -- please don't give up, however, because I have some good news for you: this is what we call a "soft block," which means that once you register an account and log in, you'll be fully able to edit. You will have to register your account from an outside address (home, friend's house, local library, anywhere else with a web connection), but once that's done, you'll be able to edit AND won't have to put up with all this crap from the vandals in your midst. I know it's a hassle, but I highly recommend that route; even if you're unblocked today, it's only a matter of time before another soft block like this is forced by the actions of some perk. Think about it, at least. Luna Santin 09:37, 27 October 2006 (UTC)"
