The 1st Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at Portland, Maine on May 3, 1861 and was mustered out there on August 5, 1861. The regiment was raised in response to Abraham Licnoln's first call for Volunteers and was raised from ten companies of state militia. transferred to Washington on June 1, 1861 it remained there until August 1, 1861. It spent its entire service in the Washington defenses and saw no combat. Soldiers in the regiment who wanted to remain in service transferred to the 10th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment and later the 29th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment.[1]
