1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment 'Deuce Four' was one of the first Buffalo Soldier regiments in the United States Army along with the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments. They were involved in the Spanish-American War and were involved in Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders famous charge up San Juan Hill. Currently they are assigned to the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, a Stryker brigade and returned from combat operations in Iraq on October of 2005. Along with many other medals, the Battalion came home with 181 Purple Hearts and played a crucial role in the Battle for Mosul (2004). During that battle, the Battalion saw some of the heaviest, sustained fighting of the insurgency to date.
edit: The unit has now been reflagged as the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment and moved to Vilseck, Germnay. The 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment has replaced the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment of the now decommisioned 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team as of December 14, 2006. The 1-24 Inf. is now part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division based in Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.
