[edit] What the hell is going on?

I went on Wikipedia to add something to the Central Secondary School page and our IP was blocked. Why would the admins block our school?

Well, the problem is that a you all, as you should know, share an IP adress with 49 other schools. And some of the pupils/students there seem to think that vandalizing pages is a fun way to pass the time, resulting in many complaints of other users. Unlike in reallife (tm) however you cannot vandalize stuff on wikipedia without leaving your information - in this case your IP adress - behind. If vandalism gets out of hand, the admins may decide to block IP adresses from editing - resulting in all the 50 schools being unable to edit, until the block expires. [edit] list of schools

[edit] I went on the administrator's noticeboard...

Canada schools can't control their kids? What the hell does that mean? Whoever wrote that is a knob. This IP address is shared by schools in the Thames Valley District School Board, not all of Canada. By the way, there is such a thing as computer labs where a student can type away on Wikipedia while the teacher sits at the front of the class thinking they're working. Do you have a brain in your heads? Teachers can't control their kids, what a crock of shit. It's got nothing to do with control, but everything to do with sneaking around websites.

You have recently vandalized a Wikipedia article, and you are now being asked to stop this type of behavior. You're welcome to continue editing Wikipedia, so long as these edits are constructive. Please see Wikipedia's Blocking policy and what constitutes vandalism; such actions are not tolerated on Wikipedia, and are not taken lightly.

We hope that you will become a legitimate editor and create an account. Again, you are welcome here at Wikipedia, but remember not to vandalize or you will soon be blocked from editing.

If you feel you have received this message in error, it may be because you are using a shared IP address. Nevertheless, repeated vandalism from this address may cause you to be included in any future punishments such as temporary blocks or bans. To avoid confusion in the future, we invite you to create a user account of your own.

[edit] Yankees76, Sango123, all you goofs.

What do you have against us?

Nothing. I'm not an admin - I didn't block your school(s), I'm merely suggesting you stop vandalizing articles and start adding constructive edits. Also, stop editing anonymously by hiding behind your school's IP. Create a user account of your own. I would also suggest you stop the personal attacks on other editors - otherwise you'll stay blocked. Simple as that. We don't ---- around here. Yankees76 14:21, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What is all this about?

I heard from my friend at another school that all the schools in the Thames Valley District are unable to make edits on Wikipedia. Why is this? What does it mean by vandalism?

Create a personal account and stop editing anonymously. Problem solved.
The proble for you is that all schools in the Thames Valley District are using the same IP-adress, and if someone vandalize here, the IP-adress is blocked for a period of time. AzaToth 14:36, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Twejoel 18:49, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia's no personal attacks policy: There is no excuse for personal attacks on other contributors. Do not make them. Comment on content, not on the contributor; personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Note that you may be blocked for disruption. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thanks, Twejoel 18:49, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blocking

Just for the record: a user (or possibly several) within your school system is a concerted vandal who has had to be temporarily blocked 27 times in the past year. And even after the block expires, they just keep coming back and vandalizing again — just today, they made a number of inappropriate edits to London, Ontario, including a link to an online porn video. The IP is never permanently blocked, but Wikipedia has to be able to stop people from doing these things somehow.

I'd still recommend that if any legitimate user in your school system wants to edit Wikipedia from school, you do it by registering your own personal user name. Those are not affected by IP blocks.

It's unfortunate that one or two twits who think inserting pornography in Wikipedia articles is funny are screwing things up for a lot of legitimate users, but Wikipedia has to be able to control this kind of thing. If you don't like it, find the offending contributor and make him stop — for what it's worth, based on their edits today I'd guess that they have classmates named Laura Thornton, Matt Ries, Anthony Lai and Nathan Boles, if that helps you narrow down where to look. They seem to like labelling these four classmates as hos and cocksuckers, if that gives you some indication of why we need to impose the block. Bearcat 20:33, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Note to sysops: Unblocking yourself should almost never be done. If you disagree with the block, contact another administrator. David | Talk 14:19, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Requesting unblocking, can't create account.

Hello, I am unable to create an account (as requested of me in the talk page) I am requesting a temporary unblocking so I may do this {{unblock}}

I'm afraid creating an account isn't going to get you past the block on this IP anyway, (see WP:BPP, we're working on it), so can you just create an account at home, since that's where you'll have to edit from? --Rory096 03:10, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
