The 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship took place in Saudi Arabia between February 16 and March 3, 1989. The 1989 championship was the 7th contested.

The following 16 teams qualified for the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship. Host Saudi Arabia did not have to qualify for the tournament.

The 16 teams were split into four groups of four teams. Four group winners, and four second place finishers qualify for the knockout round.
