[edit] Race summary
From the lights, Nelson Piquet took the lead from Ayrton Senna with the Benettons of Thierry Boutsen and Teo Fabi outdragging Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost. Piquet's lead was not to last long - on lap 7, he had to pit with engine overheating caused by litter on the track getting into the radiator sidepods.
Following a constant succession of tyre stops, the lead changed hands between Piquet, Senna and Prost.
Mansell fought up to 2nd place before his pit stop handed it to Boutsen, who was performing admirably for Benetton.
On lap 21 Prost retook the lead which he would maintain until the flag, preserving his tyres to only require two tyre stops.
On lap 50, Senna's engine blew, causing him to retire from the 2nd place he had held for much of the race despite problems with the Lotus' active suspension.
Prost's 26th victory made him the second most successful Grand Prix driver after Jackie Stewart, leading home Piquet and team-mate Stefan Johansson.
Gerhard Berger finished 4th after battling handling difficulties with the Ferrari, with Boutsen a fine 5th and Mansell battling a late puncture to gain the last WDC point.
