[edit] page layout years

There is a discussion on my talk page on page layout.

For most of the last three hundred years there is inconsistency and duplication between the year in topic paragraph, the "see also" box and what is on the year by topic pages. Prior to 1950 I am pretty convinced we can painlessly (except for sore fingers) delete all of the year in topic paragraphs and ensure that the material goes into a "see also" box, creating such a box where none exists. Post 1950, particularly from the "year in US television" link a lot of material has been added to this paragraph as highlights (sometimes making up most of the page content pointed at).

Personally I think we should still delete the paragraph, keep the box linking to the topic sites and move any particularly important parts of the year in topic paragraph to the main chronological list. This does involve undoing quite a bit of work which someone has done.

Therefore, unlike for prior to 1950 (where I've said no objection= I do it) for post 1950 I won't touch these pages unless a significant number of people agree with the change. (I am also unlikely to get the pre 1950 stuff done before summer unless the service speed improves dramatically).

[edit] Births and Deaths

I've started doing a bit of pruning on the Births and Deaths section - since we have a category for 1975 Births, it seems pretty obvious that we should be at least a bit selective on who goes in this article, otherwise it's a very odd selection or just far, far too long a list. So I've gone through a section and cut out some names - I'd say sportsmen who haven't been outstanding (e.g. no All Star Game for baseball players, or close title race for motor racing drivers) aren't notable enough to be listed here. Actors need to be key roles in major series for a number of years to get above the line as well. (I hate models, so I've left the model there in case it's just personal bias that makes me want to delete her). If you disagree with me, please don't just revert wholesale, as some of the people are not famous (e.g. the Hungarian spiritualist who generates no google hits at all). • Following on from the above - unless I've missed something (and I'm English, so I may well have done) Mr Gramatica isn't the most outstandingly famous kicker of recent years. Kicker in American football isn't exactly the most high profile fame position, so unless you've been really notable for a series of years (I've heard of Morten Andersen, who has played for so long he was already a veteran when American football was popular in the UK, and I believe he played in a large number of Pro bowls, so he might qualify). If you want to scream about how I deleted your hero but left, say, some guitarist in from a band - I know nothing of popular music, and it isn't judged as easily as US sports fame, so if he's a nonentity, please feel free to delete also (and move to 1975 in music). [edit] John Titor

Does this junk really belong here? I can see it maybe in an article about this possibly fake? weirdo, but to put stuff about his alleged time travel exploits on a history page like this is playing very loose with the facts. Nowimnthing 19:49, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Since there seem to be no objections, I am removing it. revert with comments if you do not agree. Nowimnthing 21:31, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
