- March 1 - The new Penal Code of Cuba enters into force, decriminalizing homosexual acts.
- May 21 - White Night Riots occur in San Francisco after Dan White uses the "Twinkie defense" to get a conviction of voluntary manslaughter instead of murder in the assassination of Harvey Milk and George Moscone.
- June - The Sydney Gay Mardi Gras is held for the first time, a year after the protest march in 1978.
- September 1 - Harry Hay, his partner John Burnside, Don Kilhefner and Mitch Walker hold the first Radical Faerie gathering in Benson, Arizona with over 75 men in attendance.
- October 14 - Washington, DC - The first gay rights march was held in the United States' capital with about 100,000 people in attendance.
