The 7th Pan American Games were held in Mexico City, Mexico, from October 12 to October 26, 1975, exactly twenty years after the 2nd Pan American Games were held there. It was the third major sporting event held in the Mexican capital in seven years, after the 1968 Summer Olympics and the 1970 Football World Cup.

[edit] Host City Election

Santiago, Chile, had originally been awarded the VIIth Pan American Games. Financial difficulties and political turmoil forced the organizers to withdraw. The Brazilian city of São Paulo was then awarded the games, but was force to withdraw on October 17, 1974 due to financial problems and a meningitis outbreak. Two days later, on October 19, Mexico City was named host city. PASO members were impressed by the organization of the Games on such short notice. So much so, that they elected the President of the Mexican Olympic Committee, Mario Vasquez Rana, as the next PASO President during their meeting in Mexico City.
