  • June 22 - The Chicago Transit Authority opens the Congress Expressway rapid transit line, pioneering the first use of rail rapid transit and a multi-lane automobile expressway in the same grade-separated right-of-way. The route connects with the Milwaukee-Dearborn-Congress Subway at the Chicago River and extends west to Des Plaines Avenue in Forest Park.
