- Forced to flee the country following his indictment for tax evasion, Boston mobster Philip Bruccola turns control of his criminal operations to Raymond Patriarca, Sr. who eventually transforms the confederation of Italian gangs into what will eventually become the Patriarca crime family.
- Marvin Bas, a syndicate defense lawyer, is killed shortly before being called to testify before the Kefauver Committee.
- February 28 - Abraham Davidian, while waiting to testify in a major West Coast narcotics investigation, is shot to death in Fresno, California.
- April 6 - Kansas City mobster Charles Binaggio, along with bodyguard Charles Gargotta, is found shot to death in a gangland slaying and succeeded by Anthony Gizzo.
- May 26 - The Senate Special Committee to Investigate Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce (later to become known as the Kefauver Committee) officially opened hearings in Miami, Florida and would continue throughout major cities throughout the country until August 17, 1951.
- June 5 - James Lumia, head of the Tampa crime family, is gunned down on a street corner and is succeeded by Santo Trafficante, Sr..
- July 5 - In Sicily the bandit and separatist Salvatore Giuliano is killed in Castelvetrano. According to police, carabinieri captain Antonio Perenze shot him as he was resisting arrest. However, Gaspare Pisciotta, Giuliano's lieutenant, claimed later that police had promised him a pardon and reward if he would kill Giuliano. Pisciotta claimed to have killed Giuliano on the instruction of Mario Scelba, then Minister of the Interior.
