This page originally had John A. Costello becoming premier of Ireland on 11th of February and Eamon de Valera resigning as taoiseach on the 18th. In fact, premier and taoiseach are one and the same. I checked the Dáil debates and the debate on the nomination of a new taoiseach took place on the 18th. De Valera was defeated and was thus deemed to have resigned. Costello was nominated and then duly appointed by the President of Ireland. I made one other technical switch. It is technically incorrect to talk about being Taoiseach of Ireland in 1948. The word 'Ireland' was taken to refer to the 32 county nation. The 26 county state was named Éire in the 1937 constitution. From 1st April 1949, the generally used term to refer to the 26 county state is the Republic of Ireland. Between 29th December 1937 and 1st April 1949, the correct term for the 26 county state (as opposed to the 32 county nation) was Éire. Though to complicate matters, Éire is still the constitutional name. Ireland is the diplomatic name (though some states refuse to use it), the Republic of Ireland is the description and the often used Irish Republic is non-existent bullshit that only refers to the UDI state between 1919 and 1922! And yes it is confusing. Blame Eamon de Valera and his stupid name games in the 1937 constitution for causing all the confusion. Even Irish people find the whole thing a mess. (To avoid any confusion, I have put after Éire (formerly the Irish Free State) yes, yet another bloody name!. Or I will do when I go back to the page.

By the way, to show just how confusing it all is, Éire is actually gaelic for . . . Ireland! But Article 4 made clear that Éire was the name, Ireland a secondary translation, with Éire the state name. It is even more complex than that but I won't bore you with the details. BTW, just in case you noticed it, my usernic, Éireann is the genitive of Éire, FearÉIREANN meaning man of Ireland - more utterly useless information. :-) FearÉÍREANN 00:28 19 May 2003 (UTC)

[edit] ======================

I have put a general comment on year layout on my talk page, particularly on the way year by topic is dealt with. There are three different variants and I would like agreement to standardise. This would involve deleting the year by topic from the paragraph list on this page but keeping the box at the top --BozMo 14:10, 5 May 2004 (UTC)(talk)
