193rd Rifle Division (Soviet Union)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The number 193 has been used for both a Rifle Division and a Tank Division in Soviet Army history. There is little information available regarding the Second World War history of the 193rd Rifle Division but more about its postwar heraldic successors.

Originally the 193rd Rifle Division was active in 1941-1945, and operated with the 105th Rifle Corps, 65th Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front; by 1955 it was the 22nd Mechanized Division, and in 1957 it became the 36th Tank Division. In 1965 it was restored to its Second World War number and became the 193rd Tank Division.

In 1991-2 the 193rd Tank Division incorporated the 251st, 262nd, and 264th Tank Regiments, 297th Motor Rifle Regiment, and 852nd SP Artillery Regiment, plus the 929th Air defence Missile Regiment and smaller supporting units.

The 193rd Tank Division was stationed in the Belarussian Military District with the 5th Guards Tank Army at Bobruisk. In 1991 it became a Base for Storage of Weapons & Equipment and in 1992 it came under Belarussian control.

Division honorifics were - Russian: непровская краснознаменная, орденов Ленина, Суворова, Кутузова.
