[edit] Events
The Ranji Trophy was launched following a meeting of the Indian cricket board in July 1934 and the competition began in the 1934-35 season. The trophy was donated by the Maharajah of Patiala but named after KS Ranjitsinhji, even though he barely played any of his cricket in the country. The original tournament format was a series of knock-out rounds through to a timeless final.
