- Al Capone sent to an Atlanta prison on account of his 1931 evasion indictment. Following Capone's conviction, Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti succeeeds Capone as leader of the Chicago Outfit, with Tony Accardo as Underboss. With Chicago's criminal activity united in a criminal syndicate, the Chicago Outfit as an organization soon becomes similarly organized as the National Crime Syndicate into the modern version of the organization as it appears today.
- Charles Luciano begins employing Louis Buchalter's Murder, Inc. specifically for murder for hire by the National Crime Syndicate.
- Future Gambino crime family leader, Paul Castellano, is brought in the Gambino crime family by Carlo Gambino.
- Sicilian mafiosi Vito Cascio Ferro dies in Rome, Italy while in prison.
- February 9 - Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll is killed in a drive by shooting while attempting to extort Owney Madden from a public telephone booth several blocks from Madden's apartment.
- March 16 - Antonio Lonzo and Gerard Vernotico are killed by members of the Genovese crime family.
- July 29 - Pittsburgh bootleggers John, Arthur and James Volpe are shot to death in a Pittsburgh coffee shop, reportedly ordered by Pittsburgh crime family leader John Bazzano.
- August 8 - John Bazzano is found stuffed in a bulap sack and his body dumped on a Brooklyn street, after being strangled then stabbed to death. Bazzano's murder may have been connected to the gangland slaying of the Volpe brothers weeks earlier. Vincenzo Capizzi would later succeed Bazzano as head of the Pittsburgh family.
- September 1 - New York Mayor James J. Walker resigns from office, following his testimony before the Seabury Commission.
