Western Province were the holders of the Currie Cup and automatically qualified for the final. Their challengers were determined by reference to the qualifying round-robin. The challengers, Transvaal, were determined by reference to number of wins. Had there been a tie on number of wins, the result of the head-to-head match would have been used to determine the winners of the qualifying round.
