10 January - Frederick Roberts arrives at Cape Town to replace Redvers Henry Buller as commander-in-chief of the British forces in South Africa. He is accompanied by Horatio Kitchener as his chief-of-staff

19-24 January - Battle of Spionkop Boer forces under the command of Louis Botha defeat the British forces under the command of Redvers Buller

5 February - Battle of Val Krantz - British forces under the command of Redvers Henry Buller attack Boer forces under the command of Louis Botha and loses
14 February - British reinforcements arrived
15 February - Siege of Kimberly is lifted by a cavalry division under General John French
18-27 February - Battle of Paardeberg British forces under command of Frederick Roberts defeat the Boers
27 February - General Piet Cronje is captured

13 March - British forces under command of Frederick Roberts take Bloemfontein
