[edit] Reservation order

I wonder to what the following refers:

  • January 31 - The United States orders all Native Americans to move into reservations.

Reservations had been created decades earlier. There had been clashes between Lakota Sioux and settlers outside their reservation dating from 1875. The Commissioner of Indian Affairs issued an ultimatum requiring all of the non-reservation Sioux to report to a reservation by the end of January, 1876.

It wasn't an order that covered all Native Americans (not even all Native Americans under the jurisdiction of the United States!).

Was there indeed any order that all Native Americans move into reservations? -- Someone else 08:56 Feb 2, 2003 (UTC)

[edit] Year in topic

The year in topic layout on this page is one of three versions. I seek opinions before making them all the same; see comment on my talk page

1876 is NOT currently conforming to proposed general model. The year in topic paragraph should be replaced by a see also box as in 1886
