- 1 January - Midland Railway abolishes Second Class passenger facilities, leaving First Class and Third Class. Other British Railway companies followed Midland's lead during the rest of the year. (Third Class was renamed Second Class in 1956).
- 7 May - SS Schiller wrecks on rocks off the Isles of Scilly.
- August - Scottish football team Hibernian F.C. founded.
- 25 August - Captain Matthew Webb becomes the first person to swim the English Channel. [1]
- 6 December - passenger steamship Deutschland runs aground at Kentish Knock resulting in the death of 157 passengers and crew.
