Gloucestershire CCC played its initial first-class match v. Surrey at Durdham Downs, near Bristol, on 2, 3 & 4 June. Gloucestershire joined the County Championship.
4 November. Formation of Derbyshire CCC at a meeting in the Guildhall, Derby.

WG Grace was the leading runscorer with 1808 @ 54.78
