1866-67 New Zealand cricket season
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is a review of the 1866–67 New Zealand cricket season. As in the previous three seasons, the only match which had been accorded first class status was the annual clash between Otago and Canterbury. Two events happened for the first time in this match series: Otago became the first team to win away in the series, thus taking a 3–1 lead overall, and they also became the first team to win an innings victory in New Zealand first class cricket.
[edit] Events
7 February–8 February, Hagley Oval, Christchurch: Canterbury (25 & 32) lost to Otago (94) by an innings and 37 runs
This was the first match played at the Hagley Oval, which became a regular venue for these matches up to 1881. The Canterbury batsmen had no reason to remember the occasion; their totals of 25 and 32 were record lows for New Zealand first class cricket, while John Hope hit a new first-class best of 28 for Otago as they managed 94 in their first innings, after being asked to bat second. Otago bowler William Downes took ten for 22 in the match, while 20-year-old debutant George Young took six wickets for Canterbury.
