From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is a review of the 1864–65 New Zealand cricket season. The only first class cricket match of the season was also the first to be played in the Canterbury Province, and the second of the annual clashes between Canterbury and Otago. Having home advantage, Canterbury got their first win over their southern rivals, to level the record between the sides at 1–1.

6 February7 February 1865, Hayley Park, Christchurch: Otago (73 & 61) lost to Canterbury (80 & 55/6) by four wickets

In 1864, Otago had fielded five players with first class experience for Victoria, and a sixth born in Victoria. Now, those players were gone, and the teams were on more level footing. Like in 1864, captain James Fulton top-scored with 22 in the first innings, but four Canterbury players (including both openers) made double-digit scores and Canterbury took a lead of seven. Canterbury captain Henry Lance then had Fulton stumped for seven, and made 12 in the chase of 55 after coming in at 27 for three. Andrew Bloxham, who played his one and only first class game, made 18 in the first innings and 10 in the second to become the leading scorer for Canterbury.
