The origins of cricket in Australia are described in History of Australian cricket to 1850. In the 1850-51 Australian summer season, major cricket began with a match in Tasmania, which was still called Van Diemen's Land until 1856, between teams representing Van Diemen's Land and the southern part of New South Wales that became Victoria. In cricketing terms the two sides are always referred to as Tasmania and Victoria, the match being their collective debuts in major cricket.

Cricket was already a very popular sport in Australia, especially in the south-eastern colonies and it was not long before a New South Wales team became first-class. Although it was impossible due to travel constraints to arrange major matches between the colonies in every season, there was a steady rate of growth. This received a considerable boost when English teams began arriving in the colonies in 1861-62 and a significant boost when the legendary WG Grace himself arrived in 1873-74.

By 1876, standards in Australia had become very high indeed especially with the emergence of a world-class bowler like Fred Spofforth. Australia was now ready to oppose England on level terms.

Victoria won by 61 runs against Tasmania at Emerald Hill, Melbourne

The 1852-53 Australian cricket season featured no major matches. Victoria and Tasmania were unable to arrange a fixture as in the previous two seasons. Club cricket matches were played in most of the colonies.

Tasmania defeated Victoria by 8 wickets at Launceston.

The 1854-55 Australian cricket season featured no major matches. Victoria and Tasmania were unable to arrange a fixture as in the previous two seasons. Club cricket matches were played in most of the colonies.

New South Wales defeated Victoria by 3 wickets in the inaugural major match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground

New South Wales defeated Victoria by 65 runs in the inaugural major match at the The Domain, Sydney.

The 1857-58 Australian cricket season featured three major matches involving New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania

Victoria played in all three matches and won them. They defeated New South Wales by 171 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and then defeated Tasmania twice: at Launceston by an innings and 20 runs; and at Hobart by 69 runs.

The 1861-62 Australian cricket season featured major cricket with a match involving New South Wales and Victoria

Victoria defeated New South Wales by 10 wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The inaugural English tour of Australia was organised by Messrs Spiers & Pond. Led by HH Stephenson, the English team played 12 matches in total but none were first-class. In January 1862, it played a match on the Sydney Domain; the Secretary for Lands, John Robertson controversially allowed the promoters to charge admission to the public while arranging a free stand for parliamentarians.^[1]

The 1863-64 Australian cricket season featured no major matches. New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania were unable to arrange fixtures as in previous seasons. Club cricket matches were played in most of the colonies.

The Melbourne Cricket Club organised a tour by an English team under the captaincy of George Parr, which also visited New Zealand. The English team played 16 matches in all but none were first-class.
