1806-20

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

1806-20 is an atypical cluster of large, high-luminosity stars. This cluster is located near the highly luminous star LBV 1806-20, a blue hypergiant member of the cluster.

Cluster 1806-20 is unusual in that it contains so many massive stars in such a small area: 1806-20 contains at least two blue hypergiants, one of which is LBV 1806-20, which may be one of the most massive stars in our galaxy. Some stars of such high mass or luminosity may only last a few million years, and may also end with a Supernova, or even a Hypernova, and can theoretically collapse into a massive black hole. In addition to so many hypergiants, 1806-20 also contains one or more Wolf-Rayet stars.

All of these large stars occupy a region of space less than two parsecs in diameter, making it one of the most densely populated high-mass clusters yet identified.
