This category has been set up to capture articles about sport from 1601 to 1700.
It is believed that, by 1700, the only professional team sport was cricket, which itself was still in an early stage of development and relied on gambling interests for most of its revenue. It is possible that professionalism had begun in other sports which attracted gambling such as prizefighting and horse racing.
