Original caption (in German): "Am Dienstag, den 16. Juni hatten Bauarbeiter in Berlin mit Streiks und Arbeitsniederlegungen begonnen, am nächsten Tag erfaßte der Aufstand die gesamte DDR. Mittags um 13 Uhr rief die Sowjetische Besatzungsmacht den Ausnahmezustand auf und fuhr mit Panzern vor und schlugt den Aufstand mit Gewalt nieder."
Translation: "On Tuesday, the 16th of June, construction workers in Berlin began strikes and work walkouts. On the next day, a revolt began throughout the whole of the German Democratic Republic. Around 1 o'clock in the afternoon, the Soviet Occupation Force declared a state of emergency, took to the streets with tanks, and violently beat the revolt down."
