About this IP
A bit of clarity for the entire wikipedia world, its users, and admins. This IP address is the cache/filter/silent proxy server for all public schools and libraries in the entire state of Maine. This, you may not realize, means that all teachers, and worse, all students connecting to Wikipedia are identified as using this particular IP address. Remembering that we have the Maine Learning Technology Initiative [1] which provided a fully functional, Internet capable iBook to all 7th and 8th graders in the entire state, and most of the vandalism is explained pretty quickly (things like 'my name is great') altho certainly not excuseable. There are alternate means of identifying the user's IP address, as other websites have correctly identified mine. Perhaps switching to an alternate method of IP identification would solve most of the issues? 169.244.143.115 21:20, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

- This is indeed the case with this IP and many IP's like it. However, the system of blocking only prevents editing of wikipedia and not the reading of it. The means of tracking down ip addresses could be implemented (using x-cache-forward et al.) However, the current version of MediaWiki that runs does not appear to do this. So, it would be advisable for more stringent controls by the mlte to prevent such vandalism, as the IP will continue to be blocked. -Localzuk (talk) 18:21, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, I definitely agree that this IP needs to remain blocked until MediaWiki can properly ID the IP one way or another. I just wanted to make it clear what was going on since a number of people had blocked the IP with comments sounding as if they thought this was just one person repeatedly vandalizing the pages. Oh no... 17,000+ students were available, and only a few needed to decide editing Wikipedia would be 'fun'. But there is not much to be done by MSLN [2] (Maine School and Libraries Network, the ISP for almost all Maine public schools and libraries) to fix the problem short of disabling the cache/filter for only Wikipedia. Actually, come to think of it, they might be able to do just that. I'll have to ask them. Thank you for the quick reply here, and yes, this is the same 169.244.143.115 user that made the first comment. 169.244.143.115 20:05, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

A possible solution to this mess would be to get MSLN to enable X-Forward-For so they can be added to the trusted XFF list. User:Tim Starling might be looking into it right now [3], but I can't be sure if progress is being made or not. 169.244.143.115 13:50, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- Tim informed me via email that they will be making the change on their end; this IP has been added to the list now, so it should work as soon as they enable XFF headers. Then the actual, juvenile perpetrators can be targeted better, and we could contact the school administrators. Phoenix-forgotten 04:18, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

- By the way there are no productive edits on this page because we are forced to use proxies, many of which are blocked anyway because of the sheer amount of open proxies that have been caught. I would block the entire AOL range, because that's "high vandalism with no productive contributions" too, but I fear that would be WP:POINT. 169.244.143.115 18:46, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

- I'm sorry that an administrator was playing around with the open proxy template and I'm not sure what on earth they were doing in regards to the constant blocks and unblocks, however, looking at an earlier block, there seems to be very good reason for leaving this IP address blocked. It has been blocked a record (in my experience) 48 time for vandalism with incredibly little in the way of actual contributions. Unless there is some really good reason to unblock that I'm missing, I see absolutely no reason we should allow this disruption to continue. Someone needs to alert the system administrators of the ridiculous amount of vandalism and have it handled. Shell babelfish 02:11, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
